The Brexit referendum and the rise in hate crime

A paper by three University of Nottingham Economists has featured in The Independent on 23 September 2018.

The paper, by Professor Facundo Albornoz, Dr Jake Bradley and Dr Silvia Sonderegger of the School of Economics, documents the sharp increase in hate crime in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum. It attempts to explain this disturbing spike through a framework of a theory of "social norms" and "information shock" and shows that, somewhat surprisingly, this rise was more pronounced in more pro remain areas.
