The Future of Data Ethics

Few topics are as relevant for current debates around the role of technology in society as issues regarding privacy, security and data ethics. Addressing these issues, on 23 April Dr John Gathergood of the School of Economics spoke to an audience of executives from the financial services industry at the UK Financial Leadership Forum in an open debate about the future of data ethics in financial services.

Among the issues discussed, the Forum debated the current state of concerns around data sharing and the roles of machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence; together with the growing role for regulation and oversight of how firms and public bodies handle, share and use data.

Dr Gathergood commented: "The pace of technological change and implementation of these new technologies has moved ahead of societal debates on the deeper moral issues and ethical practices involved. In recent decades we have seen surges forward in medical research, such as genetics, social media platforms and now data sharing and data mining. Regulation and governance have to play catch-up with the spread of viral new technologies. The challenge for industry is to navigate an ethical landscape in which the moral foundations and ethical signposts for behaviour are not yet well-established. Firms face significant reputational risks is they fall foul of the emerging ethical consensus in this space."

Dr Gathergood spoke at the event alongside Nina Best, General Counsel at Capital One, Joe Cassidy, Partner at KPMG an Warren Roy, Founder and Chief Executive Office at Global Relay. The event took play at Global Relay's London offices.
