School of Economics hosts inaugural Alumni Conference

alumni conference

On Thursday 13 February, the School of Economics held its first Alumni Conference. Seven former students returned to speak to current students about their careers since leaving the University of Nottingham.

The event, hosted by Deputy Head of school and Director of Careers, Professor John Gathergood, began with afternoon tea giving attendees a chance to network in an informal setting. This was followed by two panel and Q&A sessions where the alumni presented about their careers, shared tips for using an economics degree at work and, in some cases, stories about how their career paths and expectations have changed over time.

The first panel covered Government and Policy careers and included speakers who work (or have worked) at the Office for National Statistics, Home Office, Department for Transport, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and in leading economic consultancy, Oxford Economics.

On the second panel, focusing on careers in Finance and Entrepreneurship, the alumni spoke of their work with start-up companies such as Secret Escapes and Revolut, as well as roles at AIG, Morgan Stanley and global research and advisory firm, Gartner.

The event was well attended by both undergraduate and postgraduate students and feedback has been incredibly positive, including:

‘A good number of speakers from a variety of backgrounds and career paths.’

‘Good range of speakers that all seemed very relatable.’

‘The cupcakes were lovely, the speakers entertaining and interesting. The whole atmosphere and also question circle at the end were very much to my liking.’

The School of Economics would like to extend a huge thank you to those alumni who gave up their time to attend the event.
