Siew Yee's research focuses on how government policies and social programmes affect micro- and small firms, farmers, and poor households in developing countries. Her current studies examine the causal effects of education, social health insurance and wage growth on micro- and small firms' performance. She uses primarily individual-, firm-, household-, and community level data and employs quasi-experimental methods in her studies. She is also interested in studying how personal attributes, behaviour and financial literacy affect workers and firms in the informal sector.
