Embedding Employability in English

Rebecca Whalley - Marketing, Communications & Recruitment

English, Year 3

Like Michael Jennings, Rebecca successfully completed a placement with Marketing, Communications & Recruitment in the final year of her BA Hons English degree. Having graduated in 2013, she is now employed with the Marketing, Communications & Recruitment department as a Corporate Marketing Assistant

During her placement, Rebecca was involved in:

  • Proofreading and copywriting.
  • Learning about the University’s brand guidelines by updating presentation slides used for school visits.
  • Improving and developing her communication skills by reporting results of her work in meetings.

My placement has already benefitted me, as I’m now a Corporate Marketing Assistant for The University of Nottingham. I have a job I love and the beginnings of a career that I might not have considered otherwise, plus plenty of valuable experience for any future job applications. I’d recommend the scheme to anyone.

The students bring valuable resources to our team at a time of significant challenge for the higher education sector. They’re also offering new perspectives into issues – a ‘fresh pair of eyes’, so to speak. Part of our remit in Marketing, Communications and Recruitment is to ‘challenge the status quo’ – to look at fresh ways of doing things rather than repeating old actions because we feel comfortable – and School of English students have demonstrated a proven ability to think outside the box and provide interesting solutions to age-old problems!'
