General Rules

These are the most essential rules that we follow when we create copy. In theory, as long as you abide by these rules, your copy should abide by the Style Guide in 99% of cases. The rest of the guide simply expands these core principles in more specific areas, and explains the unusual exceptions.

The general rule

If there are multiple (correct) ways of doing something, choose the one which uses the least space on the page or screen.

  • Close up spaces and don't use full stops in abbreviations (eg 6pm)
  • Use lower case wherever possible
  • Only write out numbers up to ten, and use figures for 11 onwards

In cases where there are multiple (correct) ways of doing something but the above rule is inapplicable, refer to common practice. That means the way which is used by the majority of Russell Group institutions, or by subject specialists and experts. Give priority to the original source if you have access to it.

Language and references

The University of Nottingham exclusively uses British English. Do not use American English or any other variant, even if you are writing for an international audience.

The standard reference dictionary for the University is the Oxford English Dictionary, and the standard grammar is Fowler's Modern English Usage. If an element of style is not covered in this guide, then please refer to these volumes for guidance.

The University of Nottingham or Nottingham University?

Always use the University of Nottingham - the only exception is in regards to Nottingham University Business School.

Always capitalise the "U" and the "N". In alphabetical lists where the University appears, it should always be listed under "N", but the full name used.

Never use "Nottingham" alone to refer to the University, as this can be confused with the city itself, and other institutions.
