Biographical details

She was born in Corrientes, in 1791, the daughter of teniente coronel Juan García de Cossio and Antonia Rosa de Lagraña. Her father was educated in France and taught her French culture. She married Domingo Gutiérrez in in 1805 at her mother's insistence. Gutiérrez was three times her age. She was a leading light in Buenos Aires society, and rumours circulated of a rivalry with Mariquita Sánchez. In 1823, she was elected a member of the first Sociedad de Beneficencia, Buenos Aires.
