Biographical details

Born in Salta on 11 December 1787, the sister of Martín and Francisca Güemes. She married Román Tejada on 24 October 1803. Shortly after the May revolution she turned her home into a factory for making uniforms for the patriot soldiers. She also helped her brother. He was with her when the royalists attacked on 7 June 1821, Martín Güemes was injured and died a few days later. She continued to support the independence cause, and to help the needy after it was achieved. She died in Salta on 7 June 1866. (Sosa de Newton, 293-294)

She was born in Salta on 12 December 1787, the daughter of Gabriel de Güemes Montero and María Magdalena Goyechea. She married Román Tejada on 24 October 1803. He died on 7 June 1866. In 1810 she donated 50 pesos fuertes to the independence cause in Salta. She supported her brother's campaigns against the royalists in the north. Her beauty and spirit were as notable as her patriotism and in 1816 she intervened to bring peace between Rondeau's troops and those of her brother. (Carranza, 76-77)
