Biographical details

A Peruvian slave woman who wrote to San Martín in 1820 stating "the only thing I crave is freedom". She disguised herself as a man and went to enlist in the ranks of General Juan Gregorio de Las Heras. She was not allowed to fight but given a flag to carry and "to defend with honour". She later had a fighting role under general Toribio Dávalos. (Blanchard, 2, 3)
