Biographical details

She was born on the hacienda “Zamora”, near Sopó, north of Bogotá in 1815. She wrote a folleto, Lágrimas y recuerdos, (around 1850), a historical account of the expulsion of the Jesuits from Colombia. Among her other publications are El Divino Modelo de las Almas Cristianas; Poesías; La Educación de las Jóvenes; Pesares y Consuelos; Devocionario; Consejos a Angélica, and El Día de Reyes (a drama). No dates given. Her first poetic compositions appeared in El Parnaso Granadino. She contributed to many national and foreign periodicals and was praised in Spain. She was the first Colombian woman writer who possessed characteristics of mystic poetry. She also wrote prose and essays. (Ardila, 558) Ardila reprints an extract “Mes de María” from Lágrimas I Recuerdos, (published 1850). She died in Bogotá in 1886. (Ardila, 558-561.)
