Royal College of Nursing Centenary Event

RCN centenary event

Last Week a group of students attended a Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Centenary event at the Council House in Nottingham.

The event presented both undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students from The University of Nottingham with a unique opportunity to celebrate the RCN centenary.

Founded in 1916 and receiving its royal charter in 1928, we were proud to hear about the inception of the RCN and its subsequent emergence into an organisation of over 432,000 members with royal patronage of Queen Elizabeth II.

A tea party gave students a chance to hear from longstanding members of the Royal College over refreshments. Dame Elizabeth Fradd, nurse and The University of Nottingham Vice-President of Council, was in attendance and showed her interest in the ground breaking research being done by students at the School of Health Sciences.

We heard from Janet Davies, RCN Chief Executive and General Secretary, who reflected on the past 100 years and presented an encouraging vision for the future of the RCN in nursing and healthcare.

Postgraduate student and staff nurse, Liz Charalambous, said of the event: “It was a unique opportunity to celebrate 100 years of promoting excellence in practice and shaping health policies, as well as representing our fantastic University and share the excellent research being done by undergraduate and postgraduate student nurses.”

The tea party was followed by a civic reception with the Lord Mayor, Mohammed Saghir, who expressed his admiration and thanks for the work done at Nottingham University Hospitals trust by nurses in this auspicious year.

Long service awards were also presented to several representatives of the RCN. The day concluded with an opportunity for RCN members to take a guided tour of the council house by honorary aldermen of Nottingham City Council and an opportunity to learn more about this historic building.
