Bacteria reproduce by a process known as binary fission where one bacterium divides into 2 “daughters”. This can occur as quickly as once every 20 minutes. Think how quickly bacteria can multiply in food or on contaminated surfaces.

Bacterial reproduction is rapid, but it requires food, moisture, warmth and time.
