1. Inanimate loads

Put simply, inanimate loads are objects and not living things.

Prior to handling an inanimate load you should consider the characteristics that will affect your ability to handle it. For example consider the inanimate load's size, shape, weight, rigidity, predictability or resistance to movement. Its important to consider the risk that might pose to you, ask yourself;

  • Is it bulky or unwieldly, difficult to manage and control?
  • Is it hot, cold, sharp, contaminated?
  • Do you need to hold it and move (dynamic movement), or are you supporting on holding still (static position)?

These questions will start to give you an idea of the specific risks involved in handling an inanimate load.
