1. Consider the environment

It is very important to consider the environment when carrying out any moving and handling tasks as other unapparent risks may be present. Consider factors such as:

Space
Is there enough space to adopt good postures? Is there enough space in which to move equipment such as hoists?

Light
Can you see what you are doing to ensure the patient and equipment is safe?

Floor levels
Consider steps, slopes etc.

Slips and trips
Water on the floor or trailing leads can be hazardous for everyone involved.

Now look at this photograph and imagine you have the task of moving a patient in a wheelchair from one building to another. Consider what environmental hazards there might be and type them into the box below.
