The Health and Safety Executive have responsibility in the regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare. |
| LOLER | The Lifting Operations Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) is covers operations 'concerned with the lifting or lowering of a load' and includes lifting people. |
Manual handling |
The term used for referring to tasks associated with moving objects. |
MHOR |
The legislation known as the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. |
Moving and handling |
The term used for referring to tasks associated with moving and handling people and when referencing legislation. |
People |
In relation to moving and handling, the term "people" may consist of terms such as "patient", "service user", "client", "customer" and "resident" used interchangably. |
PUWER |
The specific legislation dealing with equipment used at work is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). |
Risk assessment |
A process of identifying risks involved for a specific manual handling activity. |
TILE |
A model of risk assessment which should be performed prior to each moving and handling activity. Specifically it focuses on considering the elements of Task, Individual, Load, Environment and their collective influence. |

This project is a collaboration between the Health E-Learning and Media (HELM) team at the University of Nottingham (School of Health Sciences) and Worksafe Training and Consultancy Ltd to deliver a series of reusable learning objects (RLOs).
