Bilingualism

Bilingualism is the acquisition of two languages. It can be the result of learning two languages simultaneously or sequentially. Children who learn two languages may appear to learn more slowly than their peers who learn only one, however this gap disappears as children develop. Children who are bilingual and monolingual tend to have similar vocabulary sizes when the number of words and concepts are compared. Research has suggested that when children learn two languages simultaneously from infancy, languages share the same brain region (Broca's area) responsible for the execution of speech as well as for some grammatical aspects of language.
