Bilingualism

Bilingualism is the acquisition of 2 languages. It can be the result of learning 2 languages simultaneously or sequentially. Children who learn 2 languages may appear to learn more slowly than their peers who learn only 1, however this gap disappears as children develop. Children who are bilingual and monolingual tend to have similar vocabulary sizes when the number of words and concepts are compared. Research has suggested that when children learn 2 languages simultaneously from infancy, languages share the same brain region, known as Broca's area, and this is responsible for the execution of speech as well as for some grammatical aspects of language.
