Description

Haydn Green Institute Special Seminar - 19th May 2015

Business Incubation: Male, Pale and Stale. Is it time for change?

Speakers:
Susan Marlow, Professor of Entrepreneurship, Haydn Green Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Nottingham University Business School. Plus special guest: Maggie O’Carroll, CEO, The Women’s Organisation.

The value of business incubation in supporting young entrepreneurial firms to overcome the liabilities of newness is acknowledged. While contemporary evaluations of incubation recognise the diversity of available support there is an assumption of a neutral social and physical space open to all with entrepreneurial potential.

Within this seminar, we question this assumption when exploring the masculinised context of incubation where female entrepreneurs, business mentors, advisors and investors are notable by their absence. Drawing upon theoretical analyses and practical experience, we argue that the role of incubators is narrowed through embedded assumptions which effectively exclude those, such as women, who do not reflect the normative profile of the ideal tenant and whose potential is unlikely to be developed within the current incubator regime.
