Dr Jing Gu, The Institute of Developmental Studies, presents the seminar ‘Chinese state capitalism? Rethinking the role of the state and and business in Chinese development cooperation in Africa’.
4-5.30pm, Tuesday 15 March
Abstract: The global political economy has experienced unprecedented shifts in power and rapid technological transformation, amid increasing turbulence and deep inequalities between and within countries. At the centre of this evolution, China has emerged as a critical player. China’s increasing role as a provider of finance and foreign aid is the subject of considerable interest and debate both within and outside of China. What is the nature of Chinese state capitalism in Africa? This seminar examines Chinese state-business relations and argues that China’s involvement in Africa is more complex than often portrayed. Contrary to conventional wisdom, China’s engagement is multivariate, involving a multiplicity of agencies, operating at different levels, structures and processes with sometimes contrary interests and goals.
