Description

Police custody 16x9

For this lecture, presented by The Criminal Justice Research Centre, Dr Roxanna Dehaghani discuss her research into 'vulnerability in police custody'.

In recent years, there has been a burgeoning literature considering the definition of vulnerability. Contemporary developments within criminal justice, particularly within criminal justice scholarship, have also seen a greater recognition of the consideration of vulnerability in relation to suspects, defendants, and victims/witnesses, and even in relation to those working within criminal justice.

Dr Dehaghani will examine what ‘vulnerability’ can and should mean in the context of the criminal investigation, with reference to how it is defined for the purposes of the appropriate adult safeguard. It is thereby considered how ‘vulnerability’ in this context is conceptualised by legislation, within case law, and by police custody officers. Roxanna also offers a reconceptualisation of the vulnerable suspect, through an examination of the impact and very nature of police detention and the implications of the broader criminal process as mechanisms that reduce resilience (and possibly deliberately so).

This lecture will take place at 11.30am-1.30pm on Wednesday 22 May in Room A39, Sir Clive Granger Building, University Park.
