Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on 27 January and marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is "Torn from Home" and encourages audiences to reflect on how the enforced loss of a safe place to call home is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide.
This event will begin with a talk by Joan Salter MBE about her experience as a child during the Holocaust, and her struggle with finding her identity and a sense of home afterwards.
Joan was imprisoned at the age of 3 and sent to America at the age of 4. She was fostered by an American family before being sent back home to be reunited with her family who miraculously survived the Holocaust. Her family were deeply traumatised and Joan describes being reunited with them as "anything but a fairy tale". She then spent a decade between two families, two nations and two countries.
Following this, there will be a talk from Sophie Arias on behalf of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust on other genocides, and a talk from SU Officers Katie Clubs and Jacob Collier who will be sharing their experience visiting the Auschwitz Museum.
This event will take place on 6.30-8.00pm, Wednesday 20 February in B63, Law and Social Sciences, University Park. Booking is not required.
