Department of American and Canadian Studies and the Leverhulme Trust present a special Lecture by Celeste-Marie Bernier, Professor of African American Studies, University of Nottingham: Life is at stake: A history of slavery in black British and African American art.
A leading expert on slavery and art, Professor Bernier will trace the living history of slavery in rarely-seen paintings, murals, sculptures, drawings and prints by African, African American and Black British artists working today. Warring against the stranglehold of white supremacy, black artists endorse a radical politics of resistance and join a centuries-long tradition of art-making, a powerful tradition that survived against all odds to dramatize the enduring conviction by enslaved and free women and men that "struggle is a beautiful thing."
All welcome, complimentary glass of wine
