Professor Nolan visits the World Bank - human rights and cuts to social programmes in times of fiscal constraint

On 23 May, Professor Aoife Nolan, will present a report entitled ‘Fiscal Constraints and Human Rights: Is there a “right” way to scale down social programs?’ at the World Bank, Washington DC. Commissioned by the Nordic Trust Fund program at the World Bank, the report focuses on the question of under what circumstances, if any, and, if so, how social programmes can be scaled down in compliance with human rights standards. It builds on Professor Nolan’s previous scholarly work on human rights, economic policy and fiscal austerity, which has previously been relied on by bodies including the Council of Europe, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the Equality and Human Rights Commission of England and Wales and multiple UN Special Procedures.
