Prof. Bekou - Universal Jurisdiction as an Avenue for Accountability for Civilian Casualties

On Wednesday 18 November, Professor Olympia Bekou, Head of HRLC’s International Criminal Justice Unit, spoke at an online symposium series, Civilian Casualties: The Law of Prevention and Response. Her intervention focussed on ‘Universal Jurisdiction as an Avenue for Accountability for Civilian Casualties’ (follow the link to watch the recording).

This six-part series is co-sponsored by The American Society of International Law, ASIL's Lieber Society for the Law of Armed Conflict, the American Red Cross, the Stockton Center for International Law at the U.S. Naval War College, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The intent of the series is to advance discourse on the law and policies related to civilian casualties in armed conflict.  Issues considered include: (1) the role of practitioners, including government and military attorneys, NGOs/humanitarian workers, and the academy, (2) developments in law and policy related to the prevention of and response to civilian casualties in current conflict, and (3) developments in the legal framework and emerging technologies and how they will likely affect near peer conflicts of the future.

Professor Bekou joined the sixth panel on Accountability for Civilian Casualties, together with Professor Beth Van Schaack, Stanford Law School; Professor Geoff, South Texas College of Law; LtCol John Cherry, U.S. Naval War College, and Marie-Helene Proulx, International Criminal Law Defense Attorney.
