Dr Catherine Appleton and Professor Dirk van Zyl Smit win the 2020 Outstanding Book Award of the Division of International Criminology of the American Society of Criminology

The book was highly praised by the award jury, who commented that Life Imprisonment was a “stand-out contribution to the field”.
 
The 2020 Outstanding Book Award 2020 of the Division of International Criminology of the American Society of Criminology has been made to Catherine Appleton and Dirk van Zyl Smit and for their book, Life Imprisonment: a Global Human Rights Analysis (Harvard 2019). The Award was announced officially on 20 November 2020 as part a webinar of the Division of International Criminology, which took place during what would have been the Annual Conference of the American Society of Criminology in Washington DC.
 

 

Professor Dirk van Zyl Smit and Dr Catherine Appleton win the 2020 European Society of Criminology Book Award

The 2020 European Society of Criminology Book Award has been made to Dirk van Zyl Smit and Catherine Appleton for their book, Life Imprisonment: a Global Human Rights Analysis (Harvard 2019). It was presented to them at the e-conference of the European Society of Criminology on 10 September 2020.

In making the award the jury emphasised the diverse scholarly perspectives and wide range of material covered by their research, which proceeds from a dynamic engagement with human rights.
The jury concluded that Life Imprisonment would be recognised as “a classic book, a hallmark of twenty-first-century European criminology”.
