PhD student Jing Cheng reports on her recent trip to St. Petersburg, funded by the Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies and the School of Politics and International Relations.

The Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies (IAPS), together with the School of Politics and International Relations, kindly funded my trip to St. Petersburg for the EACS-2016 conference. The conference was organized by the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS), which is a widely recognized international organization representing China scholars in Europe. The EACS-2016 conference covered a wide range of topics on China studies, including politics and IR, sociology, literature, philosophy, economics and media studies. At the conference, I presented my paper on the online discursive construction of national humiliation in the panel of the rise of Chinese social media and its social impact. I had a fruitful discussion with researchers from the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and the UK on China’s Internet and its impact on state-society dynamics. It was a great opportunity for me to present a substantive part of my PhD research to a large audience of China experts at the conference. This experience yielded for me constructive interactions with researchers in the field and engagement with a wider community of China scholars. I feel very grateful to the IAPS for the generous support.
