State of the art AFM arrives at the LBSA

The Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis (LBSA) within the School of Pharmacy has just taken possession of a new top of the range Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The Bruker Dimension Fastscan Bio™ is days away from completing installation into the existing AFM suite within the Boots Science Building. The addition of this instrument will further develop the capabilities and recognition of the research group, school and university as a leading centre for biological and physicochemical interfacial analysis.

The Dimension Fastscan Bio™ comes with all the latest AFM technologies, including low-noise (<30pm in TappingMode™), low-drift (<200pm per minute), optimized automatic operational control ScanAsyst™ etc. It will allow unprecedented high-quality, high-resolution imaging and material analysis, with an improved user interface.

In particular the AFM and associated software will enable much more detailed analysis of molecular interactions, live cell and membrane dynamics as well as showing greater efficiency and resolution with traditional pharmaceutical and non-biological materials.
