The son of John Lees, Secretary to the Post Office in Ireland, Lees was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was instituted as rector and vicar of Killaney, co. Down, following his graduation in 1802.
His father was created a baronet in 1804; Lees succeeded him in 1811.
Lees is best known for his strongly-worded pamphlets attacking Roman Catholicism.
