Patrick Bointon, Adam Thompson, Waiel Elmadih, Lewis Newton, Luke Todhunter, and Lars Körner went to China to meet with local researchers, share knowledge and experience Chinese culture. The team began their trip in Shanghai, where they visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University and MMT alumnus, Xiaobing Feng, who is now an assistant professor at Jiao Tong. The team presented their work to the local researchers who, in turn, presented their work to the team. Xiaobing then took the team around the University and the city.
Following the Shanghai visit, the team journeyed to Nanjing to visit another MMT alumnus, Haihua Cui, and his team at Nanjing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics. A similar research-share session was held, and Haihua’s students took the team on a visit to the cultural area of Nanjing to see the Confucian temple and the Qinghua river.
The final research visit was to visit Prof. Fenzhou Fang and his research group at Tianjin University, where they team held a final symposium with the local researchers and discussed future collaborations. Prof. Fang’s team also took the team on a tour of Tianjin’s touristic areas and fed them some of the local cuisine.
The team the ended their trip in Beijing, where they took a few days to see the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and other tourist sights.
The team reported having greatly enjoyed the trip and that the experience had been invaluable as both a professional experience and in expanding their own cultural horizons.
