euspen 21st International Conference and Exhibition

Richard Leach, Adam Thompson, Sofia Catalucci and Joe Eastwood attended the 21st euspen ICE (virtual) from 7th to 10th April 2021. They were involved in the following:

  • Joe presented an oral paper “Generation of simulated additively manufactured surface texture data using a generative adversarial network parts”, co-authored with Richard, Lewis Newton and Samanta Piano.
  • Sofia presented an oral paper “Automated assessment of measurement quality in optical coordinate metrology of complex freeform parts”, co-authored with Richard, Nicola Senin and Samanta Piano.
  • Adam presented a poster paper “Calibration of X-ray computed tomography for surface topography measurement using metrological characteristics”, co-authored with Richard, Ángela Rodríguez Sánchez (now left MMT), Nicola Senin, and Matthias Eifler and Julian Hering (Technical University of Kaiserlautern).
  • Joe and Richard co-chaired a workshop on Machine Learning in Precision Engineering in which Joe presented an oral paper on “Towards fully automated optical form measurement”, co-authored by Richard and Samanta Piano. Presentations for this will be available on the euspen website soon.
  • Joe’s team won the 2020 (inaugural) euspen Talent Programme for their design of a beam alignment platform for a next generation particle accelerator at CERN.
  • Joe and Ángela Rodríguez Sánchez (now left MMT) were successful in winning Haidenhain Scholarships, and will get a bursary for euspen ICE 2022.
  • Richard, Sofia and Adam chaired sessions and were part of the organising committee for the conference.
  • Joe attended as a guest to STC S and presented his research on creating artificial surface textures using machine learning (see here)
  • Han Haitjema (KU Leuven) gave an update on the surface texture noise comparison being run my him, Richard and Peter de Groot (ZYGO).
  • Simone Carmignato (University of Padua) presented on the 2020 STC P keynote on dimensional artefacts for which Richard is a co-author.
  • Brid Mullany (UNCC) presented on the 2022 STC S keynote on the surface defects in manufacturing for which Richard is a co-author.
  • Wim Dewulf (KU Leuven) presented on the 2022 STC P keynote on the X-ray computed tomography for which Richard is a co-author.
  • Andreas Archetti (KTH) presented on the 2024 STC S keynote on integrated metrology in manufacturing for which Richard is a co-author
  • Gisela Lanza (KIT) presented on the 2025 STC P keynote on the machine learning and metrology for which Richard is a co-author.
  • Richard acted as the vice chair of STC S and attended the Liaison Committee meeting.
  • Richard was elected Vice President of euspen.

Our thanks to the organisers and all those who contributed to the event.
