Richard Leach attended the ASPE 2017 Spring Topical Meeting “Precision Engineering and Optics: What are the Limits of Precision, and How to Characterize Them?”” in Westward Look Wyndham Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona, USA from 24th to 25th April 2017. The meeting was attended by around 40 experts and students, from a mixture of industrial and research backgrounds. Richard gave an oral paper on work performed by Rong Su, Peter Ekberg (KTH) and himself, entitled “High-precision lateral distortion correction in coherence scanning interferometry using an arbitrary surface”. The Spring Topical was a good opportunity for informal discussion and debate, and included a tour of the seriously-impressive University of Arizona Mirror Lab, where they are manufacturing the 8.4 m freeform mirrors for the Giant Megellan Telescope. Richard also visited the famous University of Arizona optics group and took part in the Tucson March for Science.
The paper is available here.
