Dr Peter Harris and Dr Stephanie Bell from the National Physical Laboratory gave a two-day training course to the Manufacturing Metrology Team
Dr Peter Harris and Dr Stephanie Bell from the National Physical Laboratory gave a two-day training course to the Manufacturing Metrology Team on measurement uncertainty on 11 and 12 Oct at the University of Nottingham. On the first day of the course Stephanie introduced the measurement and uncertainty concepts, basic statistics, probability distributions, the steps to construct an uncertainty budget, and the spreadsheet model. Several examples were given in form of group activity by playing dices, and measurement uncertainty in practice is discussed. On the second day Peter talked about the statistical concepts and main stages of uncertainty evaluation. More details of the mathematics were given, especially on the validation of GUM uncertainty framework and the Monte Carlo method for uncertainty evaluation. The course was successful and highly recommended by the audience.
