C3R holds annual Black History competition and celebration

Annual Reception 2016

The Centre joins with local partners for its annual reception event

On June 1, the Centre for Research in Race and Rights joined with Nottingham's Mt. Zion Millennium City Church to celebrate the winner of our annual Black History Art Competition 2015-16. Nine year old Elisse Williams won the competition with her piece about the black inventor Garret Morgan and received a certificate and prize, as well as this reception in her honour. We also honoured the runner-up, Tarah Williams, who created a piece about Nelson Mandela. The competition itself was open to children aged 5-11 years and ran during Black History Month 2015. C3R was delighted to welcome 40 members of Mt. Zion and Elisse's family and friends to the gathering in Highfield House. After the ceremony, we enjoyed three dance performances by members of Mt. Zion, including April Spence, our annual partner on this competition (pictured). We’d like to thank April for her collaboration, and Pastor Trevor Anderson, who leads the Mt. Zion community and attended the reception. C3R co-director Zoe Trodd said: “This event is really important to us, because C3R has a public educational mission that includes learning and outreach programmes and events for local communities, schools, volunteers, lifelong learners, and the general public. We look forward to partnering with Mt. Zion on more educational and artistic collaborations in the future.”
