Current Research

My research interests are in mechanisms of endoderm development and disease. To study this we are using human stem cells to generate lung, liver, pancreatic and intestinal cells. We then use these cells to model early human development and understand mechanisms of cell fate choice. In addition to developmental studies we are also using these cells for disease modelling. We have also developed 3D culture platforms for the culture of primary human cells from the liver and intestines. Using this technology combined with our stem cell platforms we are modelling (with help from collaborators) several major diseases that affect endodermal organs including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, hepatitis B infection, drug induced liver injury and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
