Community Skills Development Uganda: Writing for regional impact
About the project
The Community Skills Development Uganda Writing Workshop focuses on the university as a site of mediation in the regional skills ecosystem in Uganda. Specifically, where early career researchers (ECRs) are supporting skills development through participatory research in the local community but where academic writing and mentoring support is scarce, in part due to outward migration of senior personnel. Ugandan academics are also under-represented in regional and global publications and citations. However, there is a growing group of innovative and passionate ECRs conducting research with local communities on transformative skills development. These ECRs are forging connections between their university/college and the local community, with the aim of partnering with local communities to conduct research on issues the community deems critical to socio-economic development.
The objective of this British Academy funded writing workshop series is to support the translation of community based (and community led) research on skills and development into academic publications and policy briefs for theoretical and practical impact in the region.
The Uganda writing workshop consists of a series of preparatory training workshops focused on academic writing, publishing and research funding – open to all Uganda ECRs; a three-day in-person writing workshop supporting and mentoring 20 ECRs to develop a Special Issue proposal and develop paper proposals and/or manuscripts in progress, followed by ongoing academic-mentor writing support for a further 12 months.
