Women Pass It On Launch Event
The 'women pass it on' launch event brought together 30 women in school leadership from secondary schools across the county.
Dr Kay Fuller, the project lead, presented on her own research on the distribution of women head teachers in the UK and from a case study that documents the supportive leadership development practices of a woman headteacher. That study identifies 12 headteacher practices as a process for in situ leadership development within an expansive leadership learning environment (ELLE) (Fuller 2016).
Women pass it on: expanding the leadership learning environment.
Speakers
Carol Jones
Carol Jones, leadership specialist for ASCL and founder and Chair of the Leading Women's Alliance, spoke about the Leading Women to headship pledge. The pledge aims to empower more women to become headteachers, so that every child can benefit from going to a school led by a great headteacher.
Hannah Wilson
Hannah Wilson, professional learning and consultant leader in the Harris Federation spoke about the #WomenEd movement, of which she is a co-founder. Hannah shared inspiring examples of the power of this grassroots online movement, which has provided support to many aspiring women leaders, and encouraged our delegates to participate.
Janet Sheriff
Head teacher at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Otley, Leeds, Janet is chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Diversity Steering Group. Janet shared her experience of being the first BME leader in Yorkshire and the Humber, and shared her philosophy of embedding respect for diversity into the school environment.
Passing it on
The event created an opportunity for head teachers to network, to discuss potential barriers to other women entering leadership. Each delegate left having put in place a promise that would help to expand the leadership learning environment in their school, a plan to 'pass it on' to new women leaders.
