Words for Walls
Workshops
Local performance poet, Cleo Asabre-Holt, performs her poem 'Bakery Blues' during a sixth form college workshop.
Overview
In June and July 2016, poetry workshops hosted by local poets and students at the University of Nottingham were held to help inspire school groups and young people to write poetry with a connection to the city of Nottingham. The workshops ran in the School of English at the University of Nottingham and the Broadway Arts Cinema in Hockley.
A huge thanks to Cleo Asabre-Holt and Leanne Moden for running these workshops, and Joanna Jones, Hannah Turner, and Dr Emma Zimmerman for their assistance.
Testimonials
The Words for Walls workshop was a fantastic opportunity for me to collaborate with the University of Nottingham, further adding to my experience as a creative writing facilitator, and allowing me to deliver my first workshop in the East Midlands [...]. I was really pleased with the high quality of work produced by the workshop participants, and I am confident that the initiative will yield some impressive poetry for display in Nottingham city centre in the autumn. I am delighted to have been part of such a positive and engaging local project.

Great activities and loved the poem 'Bakery Blues'.

Cleo began with her own poem, which was a great way to start. She didn't force us to read if we didn't want to and was very engaging. It felt like a judgement-free zone, which was nice.

Words for Walls was my first experience being Lead Facilitator - [...] it was my intention to give a fresh take on poetry, an opportunity to be honest, and a platform for participants to express themselves. It was inspiring that each participant responded sensitively to the tasks I’d chosen to set, and heart-warming to hear them candidly - yet elegantly - telling stories of their identities. There was something really poignant about being on the other side of the classroom; being the teacher encouraging Nottingham’s young people to explore who they are and what Nottingham is to them.
