Digital Survey of English Place-Names

Welcome to the homepage of the Digital Survey of English Place-Names. This is a digitised version of most of the material from the English Place-Name Society's survey volumes from between 1925 and 2009. It has its roots in a project funded by Jisc (2011-2013), a collaboration between Nottingham's INS, Queen's University Belfast, and the University of Edinburgh.

Since 2013, the Digital Survey has been deveoped further by Nottingham's Digital Technology Services and Digital Research Services; work is ongoing to improve the quality of the digitised data. The data are fully searchable. In order to get the best out of the site, please read the guidelines before attempting searches.
