The Samuel Rogers Recovery Project

My thesis aims to recover and reassess the reputation of Samuel Rogers (1763-1855). Famed in his own time, Rogers has since slipped from view.

His writings are out of print and he is remembered now as, at best, a footnote in accounts of the life and works of his contemporaries.  Rogers is an interesting and signficant figure.  His career bridged the later eighteenth century with the Romantic period and therefore can tell us much about changes in culture and taste at a crucial point in literary history.

Moreover, his intersections with leading figures of his day can allow us to reassess literary and political networks of the time.  My research will reappraise his life and reputation and produce the first scholarly edition of a selection of his letters.
