This ongoing research project aims to assess whether a particular advance care planning (ACP) intervention improves the quality of life and symptoms of patients with advanced cancer.
Respecting Choices is an internationally recognised model of advance care planning pioneered by the Gundersen Health System, a non-profit organisation based in the United States. Respecting Choices uses an evidence-based model to communicate patients’ wishes for care, treatment or services before and at the end of life.
NCARE researchers are involved in a major EU project to assess the effect of Respecting Choices intervention on advanced cancer patients in different sub-groups. They are also looking at the extent to which care is in line with patients’ preferences, their evaluation of the quality of the decision-making process and on their relatives’ wellbeing.
The research is taking a mixed-methods approach, involving a cluster randomised control trial and a detailed qualitative study. Patients with lung and colorectal cancer will be invited to participate. The study will also be exploring the views of professional and lay caregivers.
