Aims

The project aims to obtain a detailed understanding of the characteristics, needs, experiences and outcomes of patients with lung cancer who are diagnosed following emergency admission and to identify areas in the diagnostic and treatment pathway where there is scope to improve the care provided to this group of patients and their carers.

Methods

There are three related work packages: 

  1. Identification of all patients with lung cancer and collection of basic information from hospital records
  2. Collection of more detailed data from those patients diagnosed following emergency admission or their informal carers, including performance status, co-morbidity, holistic needs and experiences
  3. Qualitative interviews with patients diagnosed following emergency admission and their informal carers to obtain more in-depth detail of their experiences
