Aims

This project developed from an seminar organized as part of the work of the NCRI funded 'Cancer Experiences Collaborative' in the UK, where we identified the need to:

  • a) learn from one another methodologically in carrying out research in this sensitive field, and
  • b) explore, via a secondary analysis of our datasets, the differences and commonalities between the views of older people living in the four European countries which we represent.

Each of the applicants has conducted related research, from a variety of disciplinary stances, into older people's experiences and views of end of life care.

The objectives of this study are:

  • To conduct a secondary analysis of existing qualitative data in order to: a) develop understanding of the methodological requirements and constraints of cross-national research in studies of ageing and end of life care; b) draw some preliminary conclusions about the commonalities and differences in older people's stances towards the end of life
  • To use the study findings to inform one or more substantial publications in the international research literature
  • To inform a research grant proposal to study older people's perspectives on these issues across several European countries

Methods

We formed a project group to conduct a secondary analysis of existing qualitative data six studies conducted in four countries, each with a similar focus. We exchanged methodological reflections over a series of meetings.

Outcomes and Findings

This project is now complete.
