Creative non-fiction writing for academics

Date(s)
Tuesday 19th (14:00) - Wednesday 20th May 2026 (16:00)
Description
To round up this year’s focus on creativity – following a roundtable on creative methods and the LEGO Serious Play workshop – WHSCR will be hosting a creative non-fiction writing workshop with Dr Jessica J. Lee, to help us think of creative ways to write up our research findings.

Jessica teaches creative writing at the University of King’s College, and is the author of TurningTwo Trees Make a Forest, and Dispersals – as well as the children’s book A Garden Called Home, and co-editor of the essay collection Dog Hearted.

The workshop is split into two 2-hour online sessions:

  • Session 1: Tuesday 19 May, 2-4pm: on reconnecting with creative forms - inspired by hybrid nonfiction, poetry, nature writing, and memoir

  • Session 2: Wednesday 20 May, 2-4pm:s on collaboration and creativity - with exercises focussed on co-creation and community

Both sessions will include some short readings and discussion of texts, some warm-up prompts, and then one or two longer writing exercises. Jessica will also leave 10-15 minutes at the end for sharing, questions, and discussion.

Following the online workshops, there will be the opportunity to meet up face-to-face (without Jessica) to share our creative non-fiction writing projects, and perhaps take time to start writing! This optional follow-up session will take place on Wednesday 3 June 10:00-11:30 (B47).
