Current Research

Matt's research interests are based around reconstructing past climate and environmental variability, using physical and chemical sedimentary proxies of change, and understanding the controls on these proxies.

Current and recent projects include:

1. Palaeobenchmarking Resilient Agricultural Systems. Matt is leading this new project (January 2019) for the University's Future Food Beacon of Excellence https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/beacons-of-excellence/future-food/innovation-challenge-programme.aspx

2. Stable isotope systematics of lakes. By monitoring, modeling and calibrating recent records of stable isotope change in lake systems these projects aims to provide mathematical models to provide quantified records of past changes in climate and environment e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277379118302385

3. Environmental change in the Eastern Mediterranean. Matt is currently working on projects in Jordan, Turkey and Iran with a focus on the reconstruction of water availability associated with societal changes including the beginnings of agriculture e.g. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00334-015-0545-8
