Vibration

The Control of Vibration Regulations 2005 require the University to assess and control the risks to the health and safety of their staff from vibration. There are two types of vibration: Hand-arm and whole-body.

Hand-arm vibration can be caused using hand-held tools or hand-guided equipment, including holding of materials that are hand-fed into a machine.

Whole-body vibration affects drivers of vehicles such as agricultural, dumpers, excavator, and some vehicles on paved surfaces such as forklift trucks.

The regulations also set exposure values for both hand-arm and whole-body vibration.

Where the Business Unit has identified vibration as a risk, they must implement controls to measure vibration levels, monitor worker exposure, and refer those at risk to Occupational Health in accordance with the Health and Safety Compliance Standard for Vibration.
