Physics masterclass

Speaker: Professor Mike Merrifield
Physics: Telescopes: The Next Generation
Progress in astronomy has long been connected to developments in telescope technology, and the coming few years will be no exception. In this talk, Professor Mike Merrifield, who oversees the UK’s £85M investment in the Extremely Large Telescope project, will talk about both the engineering challenges of such instruments, and the exciting scientific discoveries that they will enable.
Maths masterclass

Maths: Using social media to discover data patterns
Finding insights and patterns in large datasets at scale and at speed happens all the time. This session uses real-life examples to show how statisticians extract useful information from data to solve a problem. We will discuss how university-level mathematics and statistics enable us to detect the occurrence of a major disruptive event based on data from social media.

Natural Sciences: MRI: Unlocking the brain
What are the most significant issues facing society today? We will consider how interdisciplinary science has been used to tackle the world’s unsolved problems. This session will focus on the invention of MRI 'Unlocking the brain' to show how interdisciplinary science can succeed in action.

An interactive session to help you understand what it's like when you start university. We'll tell you about the support available to you at the University of Nottingham. We'll answer questions like:
- What happens in the first few weeks of university?
- How do you help to develop skills needed to succeed at university and beyond?
- What are the different support services and how does it all work?
- How is student feedback used to tailor support?
You'll hear from current students first hand about their experiences and be able to ask your own questions.
Science Careers
Thursday 16 June, 6-7pm
Speaker: Sarah Allen and Anna Glaze-Krayer
Our science careers team will tell you about the jobs that our graduates go into. They'll cover the types of career paths that will be open to you if you chose to study maths, physics, chemistry or natural sciences at Nottingham. They'll talk about:
- the support you can expect throughout your time at Nottingham. Things like career mentoring, help with CVs and applications and job-searching resources.
- options for gaining work experience during your degree, including internships and optional placement years
