Mentoring and tutors

Peer mentoring

Our mentors are there to offer you the everyday support to compliment that provided by your personal tutors and your friends.

Who are the mentors?

The mentors are all current students studying one of the courses led by the School of Geography. New undergraduates are matched up, in small groups, with current year two or three students.

How does it work?

You are matched up with a mentor who shares a similar course of study to you. Your peer mentor will meet regularly with you throughout semester one. They are there to offer support and share their knowledge and practical know-how. They receive training in mentoring and leadership and you get the benefit of their experience and advice. They are available from early September so you can get ahead of the game before your course even begins.

[My mentor] was extremely helpful and very easy to approach, always offering advice and willing to meet up to discuss things if we wanted to.

You will automatically be assigned a mentor who will arrange regular meetings and who you can contact with questions. If you have questions about peer mentoring, please contact the school's Senior Tutor (contact details provided below).

Personal tutors

Your tutors are all experts in their fields of study and are there to support and advise you throughout your undergraduate careers with us.

Who are your tutors and how can they help?

Your tutors are all members of academic staff in the School of Geography and are experienced teachers and researchers. They are your main point of regular contact in the school and help you develop the academic skills you need to succeed through your undergraduate studies at Nottingham.

Personal tutors also play an important pastoral role and can offer advice and point you in the right direction if you are struggling or are experiencing health, family or personal issues, as they form a major part of the school's welfare ecosystem.

What are tutorials?

Tutorials happen during your qualifying year, normally in groups of no more than seven students. They are compulsory and designed for you to develop the academic skills you need to succeed and gain valuable experience and knowledge in a safe and supportive environment.

Tutorials are assessed through a combination of essays, presentations and your contributions to discussion around a variety of topics.
