Students' Union

The University of Nottingham Students’ Union (SU) is over 100 years old, which means they have been helping to create an amazing University experience for students for over a century. Here are just a few examples of what the SU provides:

  • Karnival – our student-run fundraising organisation – they are the largest organisation of their kind in Europe. Last year they raised over £1.7m; they even broke a fundraising record making more than £66,000 for the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal.
  • Societies – we have over 200 societies for you to get involved in; these cover a wide range of interests and hobbies, as well as over 50 national, cultural and religious societies. There are also dedicated societies for most courses too, which is a great way of interacting with people who are studying the same subject as you.
  • Impact magazine – has been in operation since 1939, and is run entirely by volunteer students. They have won various awards over the years including Student Diversity Writer of the Year, and most recently the magazine won the best student website at the 2014 Guardian media awards.
  • University Radio Nottingham (URN) – our very own station on campus. They have an excellent reputation and have won the award for the best student radio station in the country for five years running.
  • Nottingham Student Television (NSTV) – our student-run television station, broadcasting four popular channels: entertainment, culture, news and sport. The station has won four National Student Television Association (NaSTA) awards.

Sports round-up

Water polo practice

We offer sport at all levels, so whether you enjoy sport as a hobby, are an elite athlete, or somewhere in between, we will have just what you need. Our new £40m sports village will help us continue to offer our students the finest facilities, accessible to all.

Did you know?

  • We have more playing fields than any other UK university.
  • We want to make it easy for outstanding athletes to thrive to their full potential; that’s why we quadrupled our sports scholarship provision in 2014/15 and employed some of the country’s leading coaches.
  • We have more British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) teams than any other UK university – up to 100 play every Wednesday. We have been placed in the top 10 out of 148 institutions for the last 20 years.
  • We have one of the largest intramural sports programmes in the country, with over 3,000 students competing for their hall or society each week.
  • With over 70 sports clubs, we have the 2nd highest number of sports clubs of any UK university.
  • University of Nottingham Sport offers the opportunity to compete at an international level, and each year nearly 200 students from more than 20 different countries take part in our Tri Campus Games across the UK, China and Malaysia Campuses.
  • We have over 50 hectares of sports grounds, which includes facilities for baseball, football, lacrosse and tennis. If we don’t have it, we can access it elsewhere, such as Nottingham Tennis Centre, Holme PierrePont Water Sports Centre and Highfields Hockey Centre.
  • We are one of the only universities in the country to have a dedicated Disability Sports Officer.

Sport for everyone

Students taking part in a football match

At Nottingham we make sure sport is available for everyone – you don’t have to be an elite athlete to get involved. Whether you are taking part in national events where you’ll compete with universities around the country, playing football with friends from your course, society or halls or trying a completely new sport through a taster session, we really do offer something for everybody.

If you’re not a sporty type and would rather not participate but still want to enjoy the atmosphere, there are some great events open for you to attend. As well as being able to watch sport on campus every Wednesday afternoon, our annual Varsity series against Nottingham Trent University attracts thousands of spectators – the ice hockey match is held at Nottingham Ice Arena and is always a sell-out.
