Accessibility statement for NUsearch

Accessibility statement for NUsearch

This accessibility statement applies to nusearch.nottingham.ac.uk

NUsearch is local branding for the discovery software Primo VE, which is produced by the supplier Ex Libris.

This website is run by University of Nottingham Libraries. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrasts levels and fonts.
  • Resize text up to 200% without impact on the functionality of the website.
  • Zoom in up to 400% without loss of information or functionality.
  • Navigate the website using just a keyboard.
  • tab to ‘Skip to content’ links at the top of the page to jump over repetitive information to the main content.
  • tab through the content; the current location will be indicated by a clear visual change.
  • Use a screen reader (e.g. JAWs, NVDA) to:
  • listen to the content of web pages and use any functionality on the page.
  • list the headings and subheadings in the page and then jump to their location on the page.
  • bring up a list of meaningful links on the page.
  • Use transcripts or closed captions with most audio and video materials.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • You may find it difficult to see some parts of NUsearch if visually impaired. This is due to a problem where some functionality of pages can be lost if you zoom to over 200%. You may wish to use a browser plug-in or other assistive technology to enhance contrast.
  • Some missing ARIA attributes may make it tricky to navigate pages using assistive technology.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Key functionality

These issues are most likely to affect your use of NUsearch. These issues have been reported to Ex Libris and we are working with them to address them

  • Some pages do not have a main landmark. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (lnfo and Relationships)
  • At 400% zoom some buttons on the brief results page such as email, citation and pin disappear and can’t be used. When at the top of some pages a user has to scroll to get to the more options button. This issue fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow)

Navigation and accessing information

You may have challenges in navigating NUsearch if using a keyboard or assistive technology. We have reported all these issues to Ex Libris and are working with them to address.

  • All pages have incorrectly applied ARIA attributes, which may limit your ability to navigate through the site using assistive technology. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships) and WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).
  • Some lists have incorrect markup which could make it difficult for assistive technologies to navigate. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (lnfo and Relationships)
  • Some meaningful content in CSS has been implemented incorrectly which may cause issues for users who need to disable aspects of it. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships)
  • When entering the ‘Show More’ page it is not possible to tab backwards from the close button. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.2 (no keyboard trap).
  • The purpose of some links is not clear in the context of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose).
  • Some items lack unique Aria labels. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (parsing)
  • Some Nested Interactive controls have been incorrectly implemented. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value)
  • Some content is missing the correct Aria roles. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value)

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are actively reviewing content and have introduced new working practices with a focus on user needs and providing inclusive content to our diverse audiences.

We are engaging with Ex Libris to advocate for, highlight and develop accessibility requirements.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was first prepared on 22 September 2020. It was last reviewed on 18 March 2025.

This website was last tested in March 2025. The test was carried out by University Nottingham Libraries. We also referred to the Primo accessibility statement produced by Ex Libris.

We used this approach to deciding on a sample of pages: testing by stratified sampling. We sampled example pages within the page types NUsearch generates: the home page, advanced search page, results page, Databases and Journals searches and Interlibrary loans request form, and user account pages.
