A few years ago reports arose about suspected contamination of fish in Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico and a breadbasket for those who rely on its fish for protein. Harvard and public health allies in Mexico established Proyecto Chapala, studied at-risk pregnant mothers and their toddlers, assessed the fish (verdict: they are largely safe to eat), drew up a list of future environmental health studies, and expanded the project to empower and educate local children and their mothers.
